acanthus definition

Acanthus is an ornamental motif containing the appearance of a conventionalized leaf of Acanthus spinosus, a type of Mediterranean plant with big prickly leaves.  The motif was first used in ancient Greek architecture to embellish column capitals relating to the Corinthian order.  It has been used extensively in European styles.
