Definition: Part of the hip and thigh section of the body, the gluteus maximus includes the posterior, lateral surfaces of ilium,sacrum, and coccyx, as well as a number of ligaments on the pelvis.)  It is located at the upper, posterior surface of the femur, and the iliotibial band.  The function of the gluteus maximus is to straighten the thigh at the hip and bring it backwards.
