Term: Gluteus Medius

Definition: Part of the hip and thigh section of the body, the gluteus medius includes a wide area on the lateral surface of the ilium.  It is located at the great trochanter of the femur.  The function of the gluteus medius is to lift the thigh to the side. Moreover, its anterior and posterior sections rotate it medially and from side-to-side.
