Art for art's sake definition

The concept of allowing a piece of art to exist apart from any connection to other goals or purposes.  Art for art's sake allows artists to create artwork for non-objective reasons, and thus some might equate the term with liberating artists in the process of making their artwork.  It comes from the French term, "l'art pour l'art."
